Monday 3-12-07 2:39 Update

Paul is having a very hard day today. He is in a lot of pain--feeling everything. The docs are trying to find the balance on his pain meds. He is unable to click the button to self administer and if they go for heavy sedation he'll need to go back on the ventilator. He is unable to sleep. Needless to say this kind of pain is taking its toll on Paul as well as Kathi, Sarah, Kari & Joanne. Sarah said Kathi and Kari are able to calm him down but finds it very difficult to be in the room.

The feeding tube has been removed but Paul is unable to do solid foods at this time. Considering the pain he is in eating is probably the last thing on his mind. He really doesn't want the feeding tube reinserted but it may need to be as he isn't getting any nutrition. Kathi said his cheek bones are definitely showing.

A cat scan is scheduled to double check his stomach to make sure everything is working properly. This is routine. Apparently he's belching--a lot! They are not sure what is causing this so taking a peek inside sounds like a good idea.

Kathi is waiting to speak with the Orthopedic surgeon but Paul is tentatively scheduled for surgery this Thursday on his left scapula. Normally this would heal itself but due to the damage surgery is required. He currently is unable to move his left side.

Please keep those positive thoughts and prayers going. Thank you.

We are so sad to hear the day's news so far and we feel so badly for Paul and the pain he's having to endure. It makes you wonder what kind of thoughts might be running through his mind and what he'd really like to say if only he could get it all out. And Kathi, Sarah and Jen, I know you are Paul's cheerleaders right now, trying to calm, comfort and encourage him, and I know how hard it can be when your insides are torn up and crying! But when a situation arises, we're all stronger than we think and together you can cheer him home! I know you guys are strong and you have lots of friends and family to turn to who will be your cheerleaders! I have faith Paul's conditions will improve, one day at a time, one condition at a time. It will be slow, days will start to blurr together after awhile, but spring is on the way and Paul will be a part of that spring (yes, Paul, the little rosebud himself, will start to bloom)! So keep your friends and family close, cry, talk and scream if you need to, but keep healthy so you can keep on keep'n on!

Belching -- with broken ribs -- ouch! Hang in there, Paul. Hope they've upped the meds. I'm imagining Paul is thinking something like, "you gotta be a goddamn dali-lama to transcend this f-- pain." We're still all pulling for you and hope you'll be feeling more comfortable soon.

Three steps forward, a half step back. As Kath said, "this man doesn't like pain; he can barely handle a hangnail!" so I know this is simply unimaginable for everyone. Your strength and love pulling him through those first few days will carry you through these next ones.

As always, we are holding you in our hearts. We will see you in a couple days!!!

Love,
Carrie and Ricky

I am really sorry to hear the news of your accident. Reading about the horrible event and thankfully your good steady progress, it's apparent that you are blessed with many good people that helped then, now, and always. I know you are fighting hard and we wish you a fast and full recovery.

Kathi,
I hope you have been getting my comments but I may have done it wrong!!! I am thinking about all of you wishing there was some way I could help. Paul is one lucky man and there is a reason he is here... I'm glad to hear he is grumpy and wants kisses from you!
Take good care of each other.

Hi Kath, Sarah, Kari, Joanne,

I know you are all sitting in the hotel room reading theses messages like you have done every night. Coming home Sunday night was really hard for me, but it makes me feel good knowing that you all are still down there. Keep up the good work! Tell Grandpa Austin and Em miss him and can't wait to give him kisses in person.

P.S. All of the thoughts and prayers that everyone has been leaving are so wonderful. What amazing friends and family!

Paulsy Walsy,
It was good to read of all the improvements you are coming up with. Wendy really felt better talking to Kathy last night. We know your tough but did you have to prove it like that. Keep puckering at Kathy, she loves it. Be nice to the nurses when you get to talk to them, they have been good to you. Like Wendy told you, the next round of Port is on me. Love Gene and Wendy - PS I heard thru the grapevine that they had to total the truck.
