2:30 pm Update

This past week, Paul visited his doctor back at Evergreen and everything continues to be healing very well. He took about 5 steps on his walker at home. He informed me that Tuesday he should be able to put 65% of his weight on his left foot and the following Tuesday he should be able to put 100% of his weight on it. This should allow him to start working more with the walker. He will still continue to wear his walking boot. His Physical and Occupational Therapy should start up again this week. He is still not sure if he will go to the hospital or if they come to his home for the therapy.

His IVC Filter is scheduled to be removed on Friday.

He is looking forward to seeing his new home in Palm Desert and is hoping to make it there by the end of the month.

Because so many people are still reading the blog for updates, I will continue to update the blog over the next couple of weeks and let you all know how Paul's recovery is going.

The following message is from Paul. He asked me to post this from him this afternoon.

Kathi and I would like to thank all of our friends and family for your thoughts and prayers during my rehabilitation. The blog has pointed out to us what a wonderful and diverse life we have had. Our hope is that each and every one of you share the same love of life that Kathi and I now share. Please stay in touch so that all of you do not become strangers. May your days be full of sunshine and roses!

10:00 pm Update

Paul had a restful weekend at home. He has been feeling much better and has been keeping most of his food down. Paul and Kathi believe that the nausea he had previously been experiencing was from a certain medication that needs to be taken with food.

During the day he goes back and forth between his favorite chair and hospital bed that is set up in the living room. He watches plenty of television and usually makes it out to the patio in his wheelchair for a few minutes each day. Nurse Kathi sleeps on the couch next to him at night. He does not like his new hospital bed (not as comfortable as the air mattress in the hospital) and is having a hard time sleeping well at night. At least he has plenty of time to take cat naps during the day.

His spirits continue to be good. He understands there is alot of hard work ahead and in his words is prepared to "gut it out."

I spoke with Kathi this evening and she mentioned that Paul wanted to post something to everyone that has been following his blog. She thinks he will be do this in the next couple of days.

8:40 pm Update

Paul made it home today around 3:00 pm. Today has been a really tough day for him. He has been really tired and not feeling very good. He is having a hard time keeping any food down. This could all be from his numerous medications or possibly anxiety from going home. I will update again on Sunday night.

9:00 pm Update

If everything goes according to plan, Paul will be coming home tomorrow. He had a hospital bed and a few other necessities delivered to the house today. I also understand that a ramp was built today from the garage to the living room so Paul will be able to get in and out of the house in his wheelchair.

Paul had the pins removed from his left foot today. Everything looks good, but he can only put 10% of his weight on that foot for the time being. In approx. 2 weeks he should be able to put 25% of his weight on that foot. Because this foot can still bear no weight, Paul will do his Physical Therapy at home for a couple weeks on his own. He knows all the exercies he has to do. He has been doing them every day for over 2 weeks now. He will resume outpatient Physical Therapy at Evergreen Hospital around May 1st. He will then be able to hopefully put some more weight on that left foot and work on learning to use a walker.

I will update everyone tomorrow and let you all know how the big day goes.

9:00 pm Update

Still waiting on a date/time for those pins to be removed from the left foot. As of right now, it is still unknown. We are all still hoping for tomorrow.

Paul is getting restless and ready for a new setting, preferably at home. He was a little grouchy this morning. He told his case worker that Evergreen makes the worst breakfast ever. He also told his nurse "no more blood draws" when she came in this morning to get her daily draw. He has definitely had his fill of those.

Other than that, same routine...Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy every day. He has even been using weights on his legs to build muscle. He is sitting up so much more and looks so much more comfortable. He continues to make great progress!

1:00 pm Update

Tomorrow morning the surgery schedule should be out and Paul will find out what day/time his pins will be removed from his left foot. This should still happen Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

The last couple days during Physical Therapy Paul has stood at the parallel bars on his right foot for a few seconds. This morning he told me he was able to get into the wheelchair on his own with no help. This is teriffic news and one of the things that needed to happen before he can be released from the hospital.

He is really happy with how much strength he is gaining every day. His spirits are up and he is looking ahead to his next goal....going home!

2:30 pm Update

Paul finally took his first shower this morning in over 5 weeks. He said it felt good, but was amazed at how tired he was after it was over. He looks great and continues to improve every day. His doctor mentioned this morning that they will be changing his blood draws from every day to every other day since all of his numbers are looking so good. This is great news for Paul as he really has no veins left to work with. He said his blood draw is one of the worst parts of his day.

He had another EKG for his heart this morning (or late yesterday) and everything looks real good. The doctor had mentioned that he had no reason to believe that is heart would ever return to A-Fib (irregular heart rhythm). This is great news also.

It looks like surgery to remove the pins from his left foot is set up for Monday or Tuesday of next week. Paul is really looking forward to having those pins removed. He knows the longer those pins are in there, the longer his stay is at the hospital.

Needless to say, he is still really looking forward to going home! Today completes his first week at Evergreen Rehab. Initially, when Paul arrived someone had mentioned a possible 3 week stay, but I have heard other people talk of earlier departures. I think at this point it is too early to speculate how much longer he will be there. What I do know is that he is working as hard as he can to get home as soon as possible.

9:30 pm Update

Today was supposed to be a pretty eventful day for Paul, but turned out to be more uneventful.

His IVC Filter was supposed to be removed at 5:00pm, but as they were preparing to do this they found a blood clot in the filter. This is actually good....the filter is doing it's job. The filter will remain in him for a few more weeks until the blood clot is gone. They will then attempt to remove the filter again. As I understand it, the filter can remain in him for approx. 2-3 months, but they like to remove them as soon as possible. Once the filter is removed, the coumadin (oral meds) should prevent any other blood clots from forming. He was finally able to eat his first meal of the day around 6:30 pm once he got back to his room.

The pins in his left foot were not removed today as originally planned. The surgeon that is supposed to do this surgery is on vacation this week. We are not really sure why we are just finding this out today. It sounds like the pins will be removed next week when the surgeon returns.

9:30 pm Update

Paul is still working real hard every day at rehab. His ribs were really hurting him today. He thinks it is because the Occupational Therapist worked him so hard yesterday. Sounds like he even had to work on Easter!

The IVC Filter was not removed today as originally planned. No worries, it should happen in the next day or two. As I understand it, they have to make sure there are no clots, take him off of the coumadin and let the blood thicken up a bit before they can remove the filter.

As of this afternoon, the doctor's were still planning on taking his pins out of his left foot tomorrow, but as we are learning everything is always subject to change. Once the pins are out of his foot, he should be able to put a small amount of weight on that foot.

Kathi said he had a lot of visitors tonight. One visitor was Dan from 21 Central who brought him a T-Bone steak for Dinner.

Will update tomorrow and let you know if any of the procedures happened and how they went.

7:00 pm Update

Day 4 of rehab for Paul and he "wants the hell out of this place." He is tired of being sick and really tired of hospitals. He thought he might have the day off from rehab since it was Saturday, but he was not so lucky. He continues to be really tired from Physical Therapy, but is still working hard!

On Monday they are going to remove the IVC Filter they put in to prevent blood clots. He currently has no blood clots and the Coumadin he is taking should prevent any from happening.

Tuesay they are hoping to remove the pins from his left foot.

He is still loving all of the visitors that have been stopping by to see him.

10:00 pm Update

Day 3 of rehab for Paul and all is going well. He is working very hard. He shaved off half of his mustache and beard today and then his new electric shaver that Kathi bought him ran out of juice. Hopefully tomorrow he can finish the other half.

He continues to improve every day and we are all amazed at how great he looks considering what he has gone through. He is still really enjoying visits from friends and family. This is great medicine.

Thanks for all of the continued support from everyone!

9:30 pm Update

Day 2 of rehab for Paul today. He sat up and had breakfast this morning. He also got dressed today for the first time in over a month.

They did an ekg today and results showed his heart is back to normal rhythm. Great news!

Tomorrow morning they have plans to help him shower and shave his 70's porn mustache off. He also has requested a ranch burger for lunch.....appetite is definitely back!

He has absolutely loved and really appreciates all of his family and friends that have stopped by the hospital.

Wednesday, April 4, 2007

9:00 pm Update

Paul had his first full day of rehab today at Evergreen Hospital. I think he did a total of 2 hours of occupational therapy and physical therapy combined. He will usually do a total of 3 hours combined, but since this was his first day and he had a few visitors they went a little easy on him.

Visitors are now welcome after 4:30pm. This will let him get all of his therapy done during the day without being too tired from visitors.

His spirits are high and there is no place like home.

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

9:50 pm Update

Paul arrived safely to Evergreen Hospital around 4:30 pm today. He has his own private room in acute rehab.

He looks great and is very excited to be back home.

Paul and Kathi are looking forward to seeing all of their family and friends soon!

Monday, April 2, 2007

8:30 pm Update

This just in....Paul is finally making the great escape!

It is true, Paul is coming home to Kirkland tomorrow. He will be flying to Sea-Tac on a medical airplane and then from there to Evergreen Hospital in an ambulance. He will be residing in the acute rehabilitation unit at the Hospital.

Kathi is celebrating her last night in the recliner in the hospital room where she has been sleeping the last 6 nights with Paul.

Please try to limit phone calls to Paul and Kathi over the next couple days and no visitors while he gets settled and learns his rehab schedule. We will let you know as soon as he can have visitors. Paul is as anxious to see you as you are to see him!

We will update the blog daily and let everyone know how rehab is going.

Both Paul and Kathi are so excited to come home and be with family and friends.

See you all very soon!

8:00pm Update

Good Evening,

Paul continues to improve and looks stronger every day. He went outside today in the wheelchair again for about a half hour.

As we stated yesterday, tomorrow should be a big news day for travel plans to an acute rehabilitation facility. Hopefully by the end of the week he will be in a new location.

Saturday March 31st 10:00pm Update

Paul sat up in bed again today. No wheelchair today, but Sarah said he is looking so much stronger. He even had a few smiles.

He is finally off of all drip medication.

Great TV Day for him....Final Four and Golf.

Monday should be a big news day for travel plans.

9:57 PM Update

Went outside for the first time in almost a month! Sarah & Kari wheeled him outside into the nice sunny weather. Didn't seem to enjoy it as much as was hoped because his ribs were hurting.

Hopefully off of the heperin IV and will begin oral blood thinner (cumadin) starting tomorrow.

Chest x-ray taken today to clear him for travel...results back tomorrow.

Travel date and plans are still in the works...many phone calls were made today to try to set things up. Stay tuned.

Paul continues to work, gets very tired but he's hanging in there...as is Kathi who is spending her 3rd night in a row with him (in a not comfortable recliner).

Shawn, the boys & I are off to San Diego for a weeks vacation (planned a year ago). We will visit Paul tomorrow evening and take Kathi & Sarah out for dinner--Kari will stay with Paul. Jen will be updating the blog.
Thanks All!

Julie

8:55 PM Update

Stitches came out of his left foot. Has a soft cast on until April 23rd when pins will come out of the foot and then he will be able to put weight on it.

He has a new splint on his right hand for his "boxer break."

Catheter came out--can now "pee freely."

Sat in a wheel chair for a half hour. He felt a little dizzy at first but toughed it out. Hoping to wheel him outside tomorrow. Has cabin fever BAD.

Kathi, Sarah & Kari (again) are working hard to keep his spirits up. Everyone please say your prayers and send positive thoughts for Paul, Kathi, Kari & Sarah~~they are going on a month now and can use all the positive energy they can get.

Thank you to Jim & Donna for the cookie basket--Joanne for the goodie basket & Marty Mel for the encouragement!

Wednesday, 3/28, 8:00 PM

Good evening all. Shawn here, posting for Julie who is out tonight. Here's the latest from Sarah:
  • Paul's vitals are good
  • Kidney function continues to improve
  • As part of his physical therapy, he was moved into a wheel chair for a time today. Even managed to stand on his right leg briefly.
  • They have decided that Paul will receive no more morphine to control pain because it makes him feel too "loopy." They are now managing pain just with oral medication (Sarah didn't know which one.)
  • Paul made Kathi stay with him last night so she could experience the "ambiance" of a hospital room after hours. As one would guess, Paul is getting pretty fed up with being waken so frequently during the night for vitals, blood draws, etc. (I suggested he request a higher dosage of Ambien at night. From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that sleep deprivation is one of the hardest parts of an extended hospital stay. I eventually got a high enough dose that I slept through my blood draws during the night.)

Kari returned to San Diego today. Sarah says they are still hopeful that Paul will be moved to Palm Springs next Monday.

Thanks to everyone for the continued thoughts, prayers and good wishes.

8:29 PM Update

Good news continues:
  • Kidney numbers are close to normal and Docs are "tickled" with his progress.
  • White blood count numbers are also heading in the right direction.
  • Heart rate continues to be irregular but heart is strong. Continuing with oral meds.
He worked with physical therapy today and they need to get him further along before they can move him. More work to do.

He has been off pain meds but after physical therapy did ask for some. Unfortunately the only pain med the nurse could give him was morphine, which is not his favorite since he feels it makes him a little "loopy." Jen also said he's still not getting enough restful sleep at night.

Do not have a definite date as to when he's getting "OUT." Jen said that Friday or early next week were both mentioned. He continues to improve and many of the internal problems are getting much better but he still has a lot of healing yet to do.

Monday, March 26, 2007

6:26 PM Update

Kidney numbers are continuing to improve. No dialysis today.

Results from CT scan are that the pocket of fluid has not gotten bigger. Docs are not concerned and believe it will dissipate on it's own. White cell count has come down a bit and believe it will continue to do so as the body adjusts to the spleen being removed.

His heart is still in irregular rhythm and will continue to treat with meds. He had a heart echo gram and an EKG yesterday that both report his heart is doing well in spite of the irregular heart beat.

Starting him on blood thinner to prevent blood clots which can be caused from the irregular heartbeat. He had some troubles last time he was on the blood thinners due to a bruised colon but Docs believe this has healed and he should have no problems this go-round.

He was unable to do PT today while they were waiting on the heart echo gram results. Since they came back good he'll be able to resume PT tomorrow. He can't sit up for very long but he wants to. He is following all orders to get outta there.

Had a french dip from Quiznos for dinner and is currently having a cold stone banana split: one scoop of vanilla, chocolate & strawberry with whip cream and a cherry on top. As you might have guessed his appetite continues to improve.

5:03 PM Update

Paul's heart beat is irregular again. They moved him at 2:30 in the morning to the cardiac floor and gave him an EKG. Paul called Kathi and wanted her there with him. The cardiologist believes this is a minor condition and they will treat with meds and continue to monitor closely. They are opting not to do the shock paddles at this time.

His kidneys continue to improve and overall are real happy with the progress he's making. He has not had dialysis in quite a few days.

Paul is getting another cat scan on his stomach due to a continued high white blood count. This could be from his spleen being removed and his body trying to adjust or from a pocket of fluid that was discovered on the first CT scan. They were hoping the pocket would dissipate on its own. The scan will tell them if it's stayed the same or has gotten larger, they may try to drain it if it's gotten bigger. They will decide upon a course of action once they receive more info.

His appetite continues to improve. Jen said he usually eats a pretty good breakfast, not much lunch and a pretty good dinner.

We'll update again tomorrow afternoon. Thanks everyone.

Saturday, March 24, 2007

9:43 Update

Paul met with the physical trainer and occupational trainer yesterday. They said he is strong and ready to rehab 3 hours a day when the hospital releases him.

At this time family (not Paul) feels that this hospital is the best place for him. He will remain at UCSD until he is able to do out patient acute rehab in Palm Springs. Dr. Lee told him that probably wouldn't happen until end of next week. We'll keep you all posted on that.

Yesterday he did sit up 2 times for a short while. He did manage a few bites of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unfortunately his stomach is still giving him a lot of trouble and was causing some pain yesterday. Kathi said he has lost a significant amount of weight.

He did however call Kathi first thing this morning to request a root beer float or a big coca cola.

The fluid that is in his lungs is very common and will dissipate on it's own. They will continue to monitor his kidneys. They are improving but aren't "there yet."

Jen will call me later this afternoon with an update. She didn't feel that there would be a whole lot of new news...weekends are slow at the hospital.

Friday, March 23, 2007

Friday, 6 PM

No news to report today. Will get an update and post Saturday morning.

4:31 Margarita Update

I received the earlier update from Carrie Applegate and decided to call Sarah just to say "Hi" and see how she's holding up. She had me laughing so hard with her "Paul Stories."

Currently I think they've thrown their hands up because as all 3 of them say, "He's out of control." He's obviously is regaining his strength as he's giving them lots and lots of trouble.

Since they won't break him out he's turning on them. A commercial for 1-800-divorce came on the TV, he turned to Kathi and said, "I called that two hours ago!"

Sarah said that, "I'm his bitch" and all she does is run all over town trying to appease each and every craving. She said he usually takes just a bit and then he's done.

He's getting another sleeping pill tonight and they are all looking very forward to that. They have 8:30 dinner reservations where they will finally get to indulge in their margaritas. Jen & Tracey are due in this evening to help out--good luck.

So, let's all toast to Paul's helpers tonight with a margarita! Cheers!

3:43 Update

Kathi, Sarah & Carrie Applegate were all settled in for their day of pampering. They were 3 in a row for a mani/pedi & leg massage. A little shopping, a lunch and a margarita were all in the plans. This would have been the longest stretch where they could not be with Paul.

The phone rang and it was Dr. Schwartz, the orthopedic surgeon telling them that the scapula surgery had been cancelled. His health is too compromised to do surgery. Paul has fluid on his lungs and his oxygen level isn't good. The only way to perform surgery would be to put him back on the ventilator but they were very concerned that it would take him a week or more to get back off of it.

After examining his shoulder they decided to scrap the surgery for good. They feel it has healed well enough on it's own and he does have decent range of motion. They hope with physical therapy he'll be able to further that range. Paul will most likely have to develop a whole new golf swing.

With the surgery cancelled he has one thing on his mind and that is to get OUT OUT OUT of the hospital! He thinks he can just go to their home in Palm Springs and recoup. Seeing that Kathi nor Sarah are nurses that couldn't possibly work. He still requires a lot of meds and full time medical care. If he were able to stand, or walk he'd be outta there in his little hospital gown. Moving at this time is against Doctor's orders. Kathi, Carrie & Sarah were all trying to discuss this with him and he said, "What I need is one less woman in my life telling me what to do." Like that's gonna happen.

Please keep the comments coming -- Kathi & Sarah still need encouragement. Paul has yet to view the blog but once he's able he'll see all that you've written. Thank you so much!

3:16 PM Update

Paul is having trouble sleeping through the night which definitely affects his moods. Today he is having a hard day and still would like to get outta there.

His red blood cell count is low and his white is high. Low red usually indicates bleeding somewhere so he will have a blood transfusion. The high white count could be from the recently removed spleen but he will be having a cat scan on his belly to double check everything.

Paul had a central line put into his neck and unfortunately has developed a staff infection. He is on antibiotics for this and the line has been removed which will result in more needles.

In spite of all the things going on none are serious enough to put off surgery--good thing. They will be giving him a sleeping pill or as they referred to it, "a coma in a pill" to make sure he gets a good nights sleep and is well rested before his surgery.

Tomorrow he'll go into surgery around Noon, surgery will take 4 to 5 hours and then he'll have a few hours in recovery. Tomorrow's update will likely be late and short.

The good news for today...he is cleared to eat anything he wants. Unfortunately nothing is tasting all that great and for now he is only able to eat very little. He got a milkshake, turkey sandwich and cheetos. He hasn't got the root beer float yet but did have root beer and unfortunately it didn't taste all that swell to him.

Paul is cleared from bed rest and will be able to start physical therapy once he's recovered from his scapula surgery.

Paul is still in the Intermittent Care Unit which is why he must be in a shared room. At this level patients must have a nurse with them in the room at all times. He called No No at 7:00 AM this morning to try to hire a private nurse. She did look into it for him but it's a no go.

Paul Taylor will be coming to visit tomorrow and Paul Morris is convinced that he will break him out. Good luck PT.

Kathi, along with UCSD, are working on transferring him to the Palm Springs area. Eisenhower is unable to take him as they are not a trauma hospital. They are currently working on transferring him to a Palm Springs trauma hospital. Once the other hospital agrees that they can take him and he's stable after surgery he'll be hitting the road.

One bright spot for Paul today is the DVD player that Mark & Karen DiRe sent along with a bunch of movies. This should help to pass the time. Thank you DiRe's!

4:54 Update

Procedure went very well; only had to do a single shock to get his heart right back to regular rhythm. They will continue to monitor his heart closely but feel it, "looks good." As a further precaution he will continue the heart medication that he is currently taking.

3:21 Update

Paul's kidneys are doing much better, no dialysis today. His urine level is way up and they will consider dialysis on a day by day basis.

Paul has been experiening an irregular heart beat. At 4:30 today they will perform a proceedure using electric current paddles to shock his heart back to a regular beat. This proceedure will take 10 minutes and has more than a 90% success rate. Like those odds!

Had an ultrasound to check for clots in legs and found none. Great news.

We will update the blog after the proceedure--don't worry if we're a little late!

Sarah is currently driving Kari to the airport. Dave, Ty & Brennan have missed her greatly. Paul didn't want to see her go but understands that her family needs her too. Carrie Applegate is alone handling "Morris Duty." Jen & Tracey will fly down on Thursday to lend new support.

Thanks all and we'll have more info later...

5:21 PM Update

Kathi & Kari arrived at the hospital this morning to find out that Paul had been moved to IMU from ICU at one in the morning. The problem was he was in a 6 person "ward" with no TV. Seems like something out of WWII movie rather than San Diego in 2007. It was hard for Paul, Kathi, Kari & Sarah to see this as a positive step.

Paul was understandably upset and said he wanted no more pep talks and he wanted, and I quote, "Action Jackson." Kathi & Kari got on it and in typical hospital pace got him moved to slightly better conditions--a 4 person room with a TV at 5:30 this afternoon.

Paul asked Sarah if they had the van from Palm Springs. When she told him yes he said to pull it around, load him in and they'd be off to Palm Springs. The great escape.

They spoke with the head of orthopedic surgery about Paul's upcoming scapula surgery which is now scheduled for Thursday at 12:20. The Doctor said an injury like this heals quickly so they'll need to do some scraping, realign, and put in some plates & screws. Surgery will take 4 to 5 hours.

It has been decided that they won't move him to Palm Springs before the surgery for a few reasons: it is proving to be difficult due to insurance etc. and they've been told that Dr. Schwartz is "the best orthopedic surgeon around." They have a hospital case worker working on the move to Palm Springs which hopefully will take place Friday or Saturday. Hopefully this will make Paul happier.

Still need additional questions answered regarding his dialysis. Hopefully this will not factor into his moving.

Sunday, 5:26 PM Updatre

Kathi and Kari got to the hospital about 10:45 today and his oxygen mask was off. He's still on oxygen but now with just a small tube in the nose.

He called Paul Taylor and talked business with him today...Kathi & Kari are curious about that conversation.

Taken off of IV medicine and started on oral meds. Might be talking to the PT tomorrow about starting physical therapy. Will be moving to an IMU room (step down from ICU) possibly tomorrow

Got to have breakfast, wasn't very interested in any of it. More interested in ice water.

Kari said he is having a very "tired day." This makes him very grumpy and a little loopy and when he's tired he takes it out on Kathi. He wants outta there and apparently she won't let him go. Gotta blame the ones you love.

Visitors are still really hard on Paul at this time. It's an effort for him to hold a conversation and he feels that he needs to be hospitable to his guests. Family is easier as you can just sit in silence with them. We all know how social Paul is so he'll be wanting visitors when he's feeling better, he's just not there yet.

Kathi currently is back at the hotel getting some much needed rest.

Scapula surgery still tbd--hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks everyone and keep sending all that positive energy south!

Saturday, 1:00 PM Update

Paul's having a good day today. He even made a few phone calls, including one to Jeff Dorian to check to see how things were going at work.Paul knew all the numbers from memory.

The tube that drains his stomach had been removed from his nose.

He is now being allowed unlimited ice chips, which makes him "so happy."

Dialysis again today for 3-1/2 hours, but his urine output is improving.

He has a new nurse he's dubbed "Atilla the Hun." According to Kari, Paul said she "already chewed his ass twice today." That ought to be good entertainment.

His scapula surgery has been pushed back to sometime next week.

Paul's been watching some of the NCAA tournament, and is napping now so he has the energy to watch Wazzu play later this afternoon.

Asked Kari how everyone is holding up, and she said they improve with Paul every day. Kari sounded very relaxed and in good humor.

10:25 PM Update

Kathi achieved her goal today; Paul sat up in a chair for a full hour. Paul was uncomfortable but sitting up helps to loosen up "stuff" in his chest.

He received dialysis today.

Paul has an infection in his colon called c-difficile. Apparently this is common when on an antibiotic for awhile. They are changing antibiotics, this should clear up the infection.

His scapula surgery is still tbd...maybe tomorrow?

Paul was very excited to see the Applegates. He keeps asking Rick to get him water. "Come on Ricky it's right over there, just get me some," Paul requests. But he has to stick to his ice chips for now. Bummer.

Shawn and I went to BCCC tonight for dinner with the boys and everyone we ran into was asking about Paul. All are sending their well wishes. Bob the bartender is saying a prayer for Paul every night and says he knows first hand about miracles.

More tomorrow : )

Food for thought...1:45 PM Update

That's Pauls saying for the day, "Food for thought." Still wants that darn root beer float. Unfortunately they are still trying to calm his stomach so he is not allowed liquids at this time. He is allowed 2" of ice every 8 hours. He's sleeping right now and doesn't know this yet...Kari said he's not gonna be happy.

Kidney Doc was in and says for his young age and good health he believes his kidneys will make a full recovery. Will take time. He did have dialysis today. Kathi and Kari told him that his kidneys need to get working and his comback was, "Give me a break, I'm 60 years old." He's not saying a lot but it's clear by what he does say that he knows what's going on and what he wants.

Trauma team has ok'd surgery on scapula, waiting on ortho to schedule.

Kathi's goal today is to get him sitting in a chair. Paul's goal: root beer float.

9:24 PM

Paul had a restful day--he's catching up on sleep.

Surgery on his scapula is still tbd.

Thank you very much to Joanne for all your love and support, you're missed in San Diego!

Finally an Update! 5:17

Sorry for the late update but I was out today bringing lunch to the other family patient--our Mom. She had a quick day surgery on Tuesday and was under threat from all her loving daughters that she could experience absolutely no complications. Happy to report that all went extremely well and she's at home with Herb taking great care of her.

Back to our other patient...

Spoke with Kari several times today and Kathi once. Things are definitely going better--I can always "hear" it in their voices.

This morning Paul was requesting a root beer float over and over. Kathi finally left the room "looking" for his root beer float and left Kari alone to deal with him. He looked at Kari, smiled widely and said, "After all these years she's finally starting to listen to me." Clearly he's heavily medicated!

Paul also asked Kathi, "Isn't there a canteen around here?" Maybe they sell root beer floats.

He also wanted to know who is giving authorization for "all this stuff." Kari quickly pointed at (blamed) Kathi.

Had his colonoscopy today at 10:00 AM to find out reason for GI bleeding. Minor wound from the trauma was causing some bleeding but will heal on it's own.

The Docs decided that the colonoscopy was enough fun for one day and put off the scapula surgery until Friday or later so he will be well rested for the surgery.

When he arrived they inserted a chest tube to relieve fluids around the lungs, it was removed today!

At 2:00 o'clock today he was given pain meds and he's been OUT since which makes Kathi, Kari & Sarah very happy. They know when he wakes up he'll be looking for that root beer float! They said he's definitely been a "poop" today but in a good way--he's cracking them up.

Joanne left today for home. Reed (Sarah's boyfriend) arrived last night and Rick & Carrie Applegate arrived an hour ago to lend new support. They'll be having dinner out tonight and Kari said it might be a 2 corona night! That is "whoopin it up" for Kari.

10:00 PM Update

Priority number one is to figure out the bleeding in the GI track. They took a series of x-rays today trying to get addtional information and hope to get further knowledge from tomorrow morning's colonoscopy.

Once that is figured out he will have his scapula surgery tomorrow--time tbd.

Feeding tube is out and now he has an IV for fluids/nutrients.

Hopefully find out more tomorrow. He's still fighting.

Message From Sarah

Sarah posted a comment but I wanted to make sure that everyone read it so I have "posted it."

2:07 Update

Paul is more awake today which means they have lessened the pain meds. Unfortunately that is the way it is going to have to be. To keep him alert and his breathing normal he will have to endure a some pain. They are trying to keep it all balanced.

Blood culture came back this morning and it shows he has some bacteria in his system. He's on antibiotics and the Doctor believes it should clear up very quickly.

Paul did get a blood transfusion today due to a low blood count.

He is also getting kidney dialysis today as well.

His pancreas is irritated so he is unable to eat so he is being feed intravenously.

He will be getting a colonoscopy today as he is experiencing some GI track bleeding. The left side of his colon is bruised. There are a number of reasons that could be causing the bleeding and the colonoscopy will help to clear that mystery up.

Dr. Lee said that Paul has taken a little step back but that his overall condition is good.

He continues to be grumpy but when Kathi tells him that he has to keep fighting he shakes his head yes. Kari said that he continues to fight and work hard. Thank goodness! Sarah reported his new favorite phrase is, "Beam me up Scotty."

9:51 PM Update

Paul slept all day today. This is a bit concerning as they want him a little more responsive, took all pain meds away including his patch. The hope is that he was plum warn out from his hard day yesterday.

Took more blood samples and are awaiting results in the morning.

Blood pressure, heart rate & oxygen level are all still good.

We will update as soon as new info is available hopefully by Noon tomorrow.

Keeping fingers crossed for a good day tomorrow--every one needs it especially Paul.

Tuesday, 3:04 PM Upate

Just got off the phone with Kari and we're happy to report that Paul is OUT right now. Kari says it seems that they have the pain meds dialed in a little better and he is just plain exhausted.

Dr. Eric McDreamy--the Orthopedic surgeon--spoke with Kathi & Kari and said the scapula surgery is on for Thursday. Please excuse my lack of medical jargon but basically the ball & cup is smashed down & in. They will fix it with a plate & screws he'll then be in a sling.

Kari said that after yesterday the Doctor has been checking in with them more often. She reassured them that Paul is doing amazingly well from when he came in. She said there will be good days and bad and days where there is no progress. She told them that unfortunately the name of the game at this time is time & patience patience patience. Kari said they all felt a lot better after this pep talk.

Paul is still on intermittent dialysis for his kidneys.

Kari said he is getting SO skinny and now has a lovely mustache. The person who came in to shave him said the blade was getting dull so they left and I quote, "A lovely 70's porn mustache." Sounds like we won't recognize the guy by the time he gets out!

Joanne just got back from the library where she was printing out the blog for the "girls" to read while they're waiting in the hall in case Paul needs them. Kari said she was gone for 2 hours and thought maybe Joanne had fallen asleep. Joanne said nope, she didn't fall asleep she's just stupid. Said it took her forever to print out the blog. Way to hang in there Joanne! I'll say it again...keep leaving those messages because they are being read and are very much appreciated! Thanks all.

Monday 9:53 PM Update

The Doctors are still trying to dial in Paul's pain meds. He has a pain patch on but it won't kick in for 24 hours. He is being given pain meds every 2 hours.

They have ordered a cat scan for his stomach due to a low white blood count and once he can hold the medicine down they will do one. Hopefully within the next 1/2 hour. The surgeon said that it is not abnormal for white blood counts to be down after surgery. They believe the cat scan will show that all is well. This is precautionary.

The Docs have not spoken with Kathi further regarding the scapula surgery on Thursday. To clear up the earlier post...Paul is unable to move his left arm/shoulder area due to injuries--not his complete left side. This is due to pain not paralysis.

This has been an extremely tough day for all those down there with Paul as of course it has been for Paul himself. Please please keep beaming positive thoughts and prayers their way.

Towards the end of this awful day the nurse reminded Kathi & all that he is doing so much better than they ever expected when he arrived on Tuesday afternoon. He will make it through this.

Kathi, Sarah, Kari & Joanne are very much looking forward to getting Paul into a restful sleep and returning to the hotel to eat the girl scout cookies that Steve Bruce sent them, lay on the bed and read all the comments that their wonderful friends and family have been posting. Kari said they look forward to that soooo much at the end of every day. Your written thoughts and well wishes are really helping. Thank you.

Monday 3-12-07 2:39 Update

Paul is having a very hard day today. He is in a lot of pain--feeling everything. The docs are trying to find the balance on his pain meds. He is unable to click the button to self administer and if they go for heavy sedation he'll need to go back on the ventilator. He is unable to sleep. Needless to say this kind of pain is taking its toll on Paul as well as Kathi, Sarah, Kari & Joanne. Sarah said Kathi and Kari are able to calm him down but finds it very difficult to be in the room.

The feeding tube has been removed but Paul is unable to do solid foods at this time. Considering the pain he is in eating is probably the last thing on his mind. He really doesn't want the feeding tube reinserted but it may need to be as he isn't getting any nutrition. Kathi said his cheek bones are definitely showing.

A cat scan is scheduled to double check his stomach to make sure everything is working properly. This is routine. Apparently he's belching--a lot! They are not sure what is causing this so taking a peek inside sounds like a good idea.

Kathi is waiting to speak with the Orthopedic surgeon but Paul is tentatively scheduled for surgery this Thursday on his left scapula. Normally this would heal itself but due to the damage surgery is required. He currently is unable to move his left side.

Please keep those positive thoughts and prayers going. Thank you.

Sunday 3-11-07 9:37 PM Update

After this morning's great news, Paul continues to improve. He has found his words! They range from, "I love you" to "No shit" when asked if it hurts.

He puckers his lips for a kiss from Kathi every time she enters or leaves the room.

While Kathi, Kari, Sarah, Joanne and Carry were at dinner they removed his neck brace. The Doctor's were able to communicate with Paul and determine that there are no head or neck injuries.

Paul now has to exercise (his favorite thing) his lungs every hour to get them stronger. In spite of the pain he is following all Doctors orders. Think he wants outta there. Kari reports that he's quite grumpy--like a bear being poked or woken from a deep slumber. They take his grumpiness as a good sign and who could blame him?

Doctors are optimistic that he'll be out of ICU soon and possibly sitting up tomorrow.

Dave & Jen went home today feeling very positive about the progress Paul has made. Carry Ore returns tomorrow, followed by Joanne on Wednesday. Carrie Applegate and Sarah's boyfriend both fly down on Thursday to provide support to Kathi, Sarah & the patient.

Pics & info...

Steve Bruce just stopped by and said he has been getting some pictures sent to him of kids. He would also really like some pictures of Paul's friends--adult friends. Please send these to Steve at Steve-Bruce@comcast.net. Perhaps some from the Italy trip? Thanks.

Steve spoke about the accident but I will not go into great detail here. I will leave that up to the riders to tell...as we all know everyone who witnesses an accident has a different story to tell. But there are a few things I feel are worth telling.

A red pick up truck drifted over to the shoulder and then over corrected, lost control and hit Paul, Jeff & Lane.

The first 3 people who stopped to help were trained in first aid and the next person to stop was a medical student (all Americans). Speaking on behalf of the family a big, big thank you to these people!

The driver, an American who lives coincidentally in Cathedral City (near Palm Springs), kept driving. Steve asked others who stopped to help to see if they could find the guy. He was a 1/2 mile down the road fixing his tire. It's not known for sure at this time if he came back to the scene but if he did, he didn't stay. The good samaritans did get all of his information and pictures of him and his truck. Last word on him was that he was in a Mexican jail.

Paul continues to improve and everyone who stopped to help and the other riders are to thank. Sometimes it seems that we're inundated with negative news stories and it's easy to forget that there are many, many good people out there willing to help when you need it most.

The Bear is Back! 3-11-07 11:15 AM Update

Dave & Jen just called. They usually have a "roundtable" where everyone is involved in saying what will be posted. Dave & Jen were very excited by today's progress and took executive control and called me with this morning's update.

The breathing tube is out and he is breathing COMPLETELY on his OWN. Awesome news.

Dave said he is still very groggy but is definitely responding to family & friends.

He has spoken a few words but due to all the tubes that have been in his throat he is very sore.

Dave said he's looking like a different guy as his face continues to heal and the tubes are out. Dave & Jen said he is looking excellent and he has taken huge steps forward.

Dave spoke with the Kidney Doc and they will start intermittent dialysis today or tomorrow.

Paul still has a long recovery but we are so enjoying every piece of good news that comes out of San Diego. Keep those prayers and positive thoughts coming.

Thanks everyone.

Saturday Night 9:06 PM Update

Just got off the phone with Dave Brown and things are continuing to go well.

The ventilator is off and on which is normal. He was taken of the ventilator this morning and he was breathing on his own for 3 hours. After that 3 hour workout they put him back on the ventilator to let his body rest and then gave him another 4 hour workout this evening. This is standard procedure.

They are hoping that the breathing tube will be removed once and for all tomorrow.

Paul is still on dialysis and they are hoping to go to intermittent dialysis in the next few days.

Dave reported that you can see the progress with Paul. Kari said his eyes are a lot clearer today. I spoke with Dave, Kari, Jen, Sarah & Kathi today and I could hear the relief in all their voices. Things are definately heading in the right direction.

Jen however is upset as it appears that ALL Dr. McDreamy's have the weekends off. Sorry Jen.

Reports are that Dave and Jen will likely head home tomorrow. Joanne and Carry Ore will head home Monday. Carrie Applegate will fly down soon to provide new support.

Thank you again to everyone!

Got Pictures?

Steve Bruce is putting together a continuous slide show to put in an eltronic frame so Paul can keep his family and friends close. What a wonderful idea!

Please email any photos you would like included to:
Steve Bruce
Steve-Bruce@comcast.net
Thanks!

11:47 AM Update

It's early in the day but everyone is very excited/optimistic that this will be a good day for Paul!

He is breathing on his own. Yehhhhh!!! The breathing tube is still in but hopefully will be removed tomorrow.

Paul is opening his eyes a lot more (5 or so seconds at a time) and is really responding to Kathi's voice. He also is responding to commands.

He currently has a feeding tube inserted to provide extra nutrients--nope no filet mignon or ranch burger for the big guy yet.

Jen said they will call back later this afternoon/early evening with another update. This is the first time I've received an update where I could hear "cheery" people in the background. Everyone's good thoughts and prayers are working--thank you.

9:16 PM Update

Foot surgery went well and there are currently no more surgeries scheduled. Tomorrow they will attempt to have him breathe on his own and lessen the sedation.

He is looking good as his face is beginning to heal.

Hope to have another update by Noon tomorrow with more good news.

3:52 Update

Just spoke with Dave Brown and he said that Paul just went into surgery--later than the expected 2:30 start time. The Docs said this would be a pretty simple surgery. Dave said Paul is opening his eyes more today and had them opened for the longest time yet--a few seconds. They were able to make eye contact with him and he was not afraid and seemed, "not happy." We decided that that is actually good news. Dave also said that today has been the best day yet for Paul and everything seems to be going in the right direction, "just slower than shit!" Amen. Kathi is currently resting and the others are out getting additional clothes and supplies. I'm sure in their rush to get out of town accurate packing wasn't top on their list. I'll post more when I know more. Keeping praying and thinking positive, positive, postive. Julie

Not an update-just a Thank You!

This is a thanks for everyone (including myself!!!) who is taking the time to figure out this new blog "thang." I know I'm dealing with a group--myself included--who are mostly over 40. Yes, many of the posted comments are from those under 40. . . but Sarah said they are checking out the comments and very much enjoy reading them! So keep posting them please. I've been fielding phone calls and emails about how to do so and I really don't mind answering those questions. I'll go over it again here...at the end of each posting (this one included) there is a line in light blue text that says something like, "posted by julie at 12:30 2 comments." Simply click on the word "comments" and you'll be able to leave a message. You can also read other peoples comments if you would like. Also, please feel free to give this blog address to people who would be interested. Thanks again everyone : )

12:30 PM Update

Jennifer just called and wanted everyone to know that Paul is resting comfortably on his new air mattress to help prevent bed sores.

His heart rate and blood pressure continues to be normal today! Good progress!!

He is still on dialysis to help his "sleeping" kidneys. Dialysis helps get rid of toxins in the body and help flush out the extra fluid his body is trying to hold on to. Doctors are hoping that they will be able to wean him off the dialysis to 3 x a week rather than 24 hours a day.

Surgery is still scheduled for 2:30 today to close the open would and fix the broken bone(s) on his left foot/ankle.

The damage to his scapula (left shoulder) will heal on its own.

Paul is still heavily sedated and still on the ventilator.

Nothing else today but hopefully lots of rest!

Kathi & all would like to report how happy they are with the care Paul is receiving at UCSD trauma center. They would really like to express their thanks to "Nurse Doris" described as a 90 pound spitfire who is very protective of Paul and is really watching out for his best interest. Go Doris!

On a much lighter note...Kathi, Kari, Jen & Sarah would like to report that there are plenty of Dr. McDreamy's around the hospital to help them while away the time...

10:36 AM Update

Spoke with Sarah an hour or so ago. Paul is a little more alert but still heavily sedated. He is scheduled today at 2:30 for more surgery on his left foot. Today his heart rate is good, strong and steady. Apparantly it wasn't so steady the last few days so that is good news! They are expecting results of his cat scan for his scapula (left shoulder area) today. They are meeting with the Doctors again around 11:00 (probably later) and I will report as soon as I hear.

On another note...thank you all for your well wishes and continued support. At this time we are really trying to limit calls to Kathi so she can focus all her energy on Paul and doesn't go through the re-telling of the story again and again. Please check the blog for updates and please leave your well wishes under the comment area. If you need to call me please feel free to do so. My home is 425-882-4851 and cell is 206-910-4171. Thank you again! Julie Byrnes

8:00 - no new news.

I'm trying not to call and wake anyone up so I don't have any new information. I am working today but will take my laptop with me and post something as soon as I get a call. Remember that you can hit the small word "comments" at the end of each posting to leave a message. Sarah has her laptop with her so they are reading the comments. Thanks!

3/8/07 4:46 Update

Hi All,

Just spoke with Kari and they are putting in a filter to stop any possible blood clots that may occur due to a) the trauma and b) his current lack of activity. This is a GREAT precaution and one I honestly can’t believe I didn’t think of since my husband was in the hospital for 8 days due to a DVT caused by lack of activity due to pneumonia.

Please keep those positive thoughts and prayers coming. Kathi is anxiously awaiting Paul to wake up and start bossing people around!

Thanks,

Julie

UCSD Trauma Center

Since 1976, UCSD Medical Center has served as a Regional Trauma Center for the citizens of San Diego and Imperial counties, and has pioneered improvements in the special care needed by trauma victims.
Designation of UCSD Medical Center as San Diego County’s first Level 1 Trauma Center was acknowledgement of the Center’s continuing commitment to the best possible trauma care provided by expert personnel.
The UCSD Trauma Center includes a three-bed resuscitation suite and a dedicated operating room, all located on the second floor of UCSD Medical Center adjacent to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Blood Bank. Patients are seen by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including trauma surgeons, trauma nurses, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons and spine specialists. All aspects of care and all subspecialties in medicine are coordinated in the care of each trauma patient.
The center admits approximately 1,700 patients a year who are Trauma Team Activations. Patients who have been identified by the emergency services in the pre-hospital system to be at higher risk for serious multi-system injuries are brought directly to the resuscitation suite or trauma operating room. For example, people who have sustained severed injuries often involving several areas of the body (such as a brain concussion, internal bleeding, and broken bones) are admitted to the UCSD Trauma Center. Many patients have other medical problems complicated by trauma. In some instances, patients are transferred from other hospitals to take advantage of the special facilities and highly trained personnel available at the UCSD Trauma Center. In 2003, UCSD Trauma Center received Level I verification from the American College of Surgeons’ Committee. By providing truly comprehensive care for trauma patients – from intensive care through intermediate care, acute care and rehabilitation – the UCSD Trauma Center remains committed to decreasing the mortality rate from traumatic injuries in the San Diego Region.

3/8/07 1:30 PM update

Hi Everyone,

As most of you know, Paul was involved in a motorcycle accident while in Mexico on Monday afternoon. He and 8 friends were on a Harley trip down to Cabo. A pick up truck crossed the center line hitting Paul and two other riders. Paul sustained many injuries, the other 2 riders are in pretty good shape.

24+ hours later Paul arrived, via ambulance, at the University of California San Diego Hospital’s trauma center. He is in the ICU and will remain so for at least another week. Due to his being in the ICU he cannot accept any flowers, phone calls etc.

He currently is stable and the doctor’s say, “He is doing very well from where he started on Tuesday. Recovery will be a long and slow process.”

He currently is on a ventilator. They did try to wean him off but his body is not ready due to the trauma he is enduring. This is very common and they feel sure that he will be able to be weaned from the ventilator—they will try again in a few days.

He currently is on dialysis for his kidneys. Doctors say they are, “Very optimistic he will regain full function of his kidneys.”

He did have surgery on his left ankle/foot. This surgery was mainly to deal with the open wound and possible infection not the broken bones. He will have additional surgeries on his left foot. His right foot is also broken. His right hand is broken and has a splint. Doctors are less worried about the broken bones at this point. He also suffered 6 broken ribs. He had his spleen removed Tuesday evening to stop some internal bleeding.

Currently Paul is sleeping and resting comfortably, aka he’s heavily sedated.

Kathi, Sarah & Jen would like to thank everyone for their positive thoughts and prayers. Keep them coming!

Thank you,

Julie Byrnes (Kathi’s sister)
